“Makwa Giizis” (eng. “bear moon”) is Marlena’s final college recital. Using the Ojibwe language in tandem with contemporary improvised music, Marlena tells stories of her experience in Ann Arbor, as well as the story of her fifth great grandfather Gichi Weshkiinh (Chief Buffalo) and his 1852 journey to Washington D.C. via Birchbark Canoe; a successful effort to protect Ojibwe lands from the encroaching federal and state governments.
